Nancy McMillen

Monitrice

As a monitrice, Nancy accompanies women in labor to assist them in having a satisfying birth experience. She draw on her knowledge and experience to provide emotional support, physical comfort, and assistance in gathering the information women need to make informed decisions as they arise in labor. She is a Certified Professional Midwife and has additional certifications which include neonatal resuscitation, CPR, Certified Lactation Consultant and Birth Doula certifications. She can provide reassurance and perspective to you and your partner, make suggestions for labor progress, and help with relaxation, massage, positioning, and other techniques for comfort. As your monitrice, she works for the client, not her caregiver or hospital.

Monitrice services include taking maternal vitals, assessing fetal heart tones, fetal positioning, and cervical dilation exams. She can provide expectant mothers with monitrice services in your home, but not at the hospital as they are outside the scope and practice of a labor doula in a hospital setting. These can be helpful for mothers who wish to stay at home for the better part of their labor but want to be sure to make it to the hospital in time for the birth. Monitrice services are not for medical treatment, but only to assess the progress of labor. Once the client decides to go to the hospital or birth center, Nancy will then serve as a birth doula only.

Nancy is a native Spanish speaker and originally from Venezuela where she studied medicine and became a physician at University of Carabobo in 1992. She completed a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology and became a licensed OB/GYN physician in 1997. She practiced as a licensed OB/GYN physician for several years. In 2010 Nancy moved to Virginia and decided to continue her career as a Midwife, becoming a licensed Midwife in 2017.
